Certain weight loss diets have given carbohydrates a pretty bad name. But after all these efforts to reduce their intake, many of us have started to ask “are carbs really essential?” After all they’re in a huge number of our foods and many of them have been considered staples for thousands of years.

The truth of the matter is that there are some carbohydrates that are better than others. Some carbohydrates are, after all very good for you.

Are carbs really essential? It’s like asking if you should continue to eat fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, among other things. However, there is a difference between carbohydrates that occur naturally within whole foods and those that are added in the form of starch or sugar to processed foods.

There are three primary forms of carbohydrates. These are sugars, starches and fiber. Sugar is a carb in its simplest form. It can be found naturally in fruits, veggies and dairy products. However, added sugar is also listed under over 60 different names in processed products. Starch is a complex carbohydrate. In essence, it’s a number of units of sugar bonded together. These are found naturally in grains, veggies, dry beans and peas. Fiber is another type of complex carb, which occurs naturally in fruits and veggies as well as whole grains and dry beans and peas.

Overall, when it comes to good health, the carbohydrates that occur naturally within whole, unrefined and unprocessed ingredients are typically perfectly good for your health. Those that are heavily processed such as white sugar and flour, have had much of their benefits stripped away and are often very low in nutrition content.

It’s also important to note that if you are trying to follow a low-carb diet, the labels “net carbs” and “low carb” are not terms regulated by the Food and Drug administration on food labels. For this reason, there is no standard to their meaning. This leaves it up to the food manufacturer to decide whether or not they feel they have the right to label their own products this way. As a result, what one manufacturer may be implying by using one of these labels may be entirely different from the meaning used by another.
